Ways to conserve this fall

Typically, in seasons like fall and spring, energy bills are lower, since the weather is more temperate and you can take a break from running the AC or heater.

Fall is the perfect time to dial back the AC and enjoy the change of seasons. Start the morning off by opening the windows to let the cool air in. In the evening, enjoy the pleasant weather on your patio or by taking a quick stroll through the neighborhood.

Toward the end of fall, prep your home for the lower temperatures by getting a tune-up on your heating system before the cold is here to stay. Fall is a great time to check your home’s insulation and fix any other energy efficiency issues before winter arrives.

How can I get the most out of my heating system?

Maintaining your home heating system is critical. Make sure your heating system is updated and tested. You should also inspect your house for leaks and check insulation.

This fall, what can I do to prepare for saving energy in the winter?

  • Inspect insulation. The best way to be sure your insulation is up to snuff is to hire a professional to check the insulation throughout your house.
  • Cut back on the AC. Depending on where you live, it may be fall but still hot outside. Gradually cut back on AC usage or adjust the settings to reduce your electricity usage.
  • Seal air leaks. Common places for leaks include windows, doors, attics and basements. Add weatherstripping around doors and caulking around windows to seal leaks. This helps keep indoor air in and outdoor air out.1
  • Clean your fireplace and apply caulk around fireplaces to seal leaks. Maintaining your fireplace will help cut energy costs.1
  • Swap out your bedding. Opt for flannel sheets or heavier blankets to stay warm at night.
  • Make sure to keep up with your home heating system maintenance. This is critical to keeping your bill as low as you can in the winter. Get a home inspection or HVAC tune-up if possible.

Fall Electricity Bill FAQs

It is important to prepare your home heating system prior to the cold weather settling in. Start scheduling inspections before you are using the heater regularly so the service appointments and any repairs will be complete by the time you need to use the heater every day. The exact timing is different depending on weather in your area, but one month prior to regular heater use should be sufficient to start setting up heater tune-ups.

Depending on the type of filter you have, changing your filter every 30 or 60 days is the best way to keep the filters clean and ensure the air flow is uninterrupted by debris. Reliant provides you with access to a convenient air filter delivery service that delivers air filters to your doorstep, helping you remember to change your air filters regularly. By signing up for air filter delivery, you can keep the air filters in your home free of dust and your HVAC moving air efficiently.

2 If there is no previous usage in your name at the service address, or you do not have 11 months of usage at the service address, we will take the previous usage at that service address and apply your current price to calculate your average monthly amount and then subtract or add 1/12 of your deferred balance. The deferred balance amount is the cumulative difference between your monthly Average Billing amount and what you would owe if you were not signed up for Average Billing. The deferred balance amount can be found on your monthly bill. If the bill amount is positive, 1/12 will be added to your bill. If the bill amount is negative, 1/12 will be subtracted from your bill. If you’re a new Average Billing customer, the deferred balance will begin in the second month. Deferred balance must be paid in full if you cancel Average Billing or change electricity providers.

3 Degrees of Difference with Smart Thermostats program is not available to customers enrolled in prepaid plans. 5 The billing and usage information provided in the Reliant Weekly Summary Email (WSE) is an estimate and includes only your electricity charges and taxes. Your monthly bill provides your official usage as determined by your local electric utility, as well as the total bill amount due. If you are on an indexed plan, you will not see cost information in your WSE, as prices are determined on the last day of each bill cycle. If you change to an incompatible plan or terminate your service with Reliant, you will no longer receive your WSE. Reliant reserves the right to discontinue the WSE without notice. You may also request to cancel your WSE by calling 1-866-872-6644.
