Solar panels are an increasingly popular way to generate electricity.

This clean, renewable energy is created by harnessing the sun's power, and it reduces dependence on other fuels that leave behind a large carbon footprint. But how does it work? Reliant is here to help you understand more about this environmentally friendly energy solution and the benefits it can bring to homeowners like you.

How rooftop solar panels work

  1. During the day, sunlight hits solar panels on your roof. The panels contain photovoltaic cells, which convert photons from sunlight into electricity.
  2. Direct current (DC) electricity flows from the panels to an inverter, which converts DC power into alternating current (AC) power, which you can use in your home.
  3. A dual-register meter keeps track of the power your system produces, as well as the power you use from the electrical grid.

Types of solar panels

The most popular residential solar panels on the market today consist of two types:

Monocrystalline-solar-panels

Monocrystalline solar panels are made from a single crystal of silicon, which gives electrons more room to move and makes the panel more efficient at converting solar energy into electricity. They consist of square cells with rounded corners.

Polycrystalline-solar-panels

Polycrystalline solar panels contain rectangular cells made from many melted silicon crystals, which makes them less efficient than monocrystalline panels due to electrons having less room to move.

Solar Panels FAQs

Show all answers

The cost of solar panels varies depending on the size of your home and your electricity needs, so getting your home assessed is your best bet for an accurate quote.

Once your panels are installed, there are many ways they can help you save money. Federal and state tax incentives can provide a tax credit of up to 30% of installation costs through 2032. You could also enjoy a lower monthly electricity bill and a higher home value, and you may be able to receive bill credits for the excess electricity produced by your solar panel system.

Once installed, solar panels typically last between 20 and 30 years. Occasionally, they may need to be cleaned, although rain and gravity usually take care of any debris or dirt that may be blocking the panels from sunlight.

Solar panels don’t produce much energy at night or when it’s cloudy. But remember, your home is always connected to the electric grid. As long as the grid is operating, you’re powered 24/7.

Solar energy production releases a lot less CO2 and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than conventional energy production does. In fact, emissions are only created in manufacturing the solar panels. The sun is a renewable source of energy, so you won’t have to worry about depleting the earth’s resources when using solar panels for electricity.
