Moving can be a daunting task, with many details to remember and coordinate. At Reliant, we understand the challenges of moving, which is why we’ve created this comprehensive checklist to help you stay organized throughout the process. From early preparations to the day of the move, we’ve got you covered.

The moving timeline

When moving, it's helpful to organize your tasks according to a timeline.

Ten weeks before the move

Early preparation can save you stress and money down the line. Here's what you should focus on at this stage.

  1. Schedule professional movers and/or rental trucks — If you're using professional movers or rental trucks, it helps to book them well in advance. More notice helps secure your preferred dates and ensure availability of all the trucks and movers you’ll need. If you're relying on friends and family to help, you can make it easier by coordinating schedules and communicating your moving plans early.
  2. Begin decluttering — A move can be a great opportunity to declutter your belongings.  This promises to lighten your load and reduce the number of items you'll need to pack and transport. Consider donating usable items or organizing a garage sale to sell off things you no longer require.
  3. Request time off from work — Another helpful to-do at this stage is notifying your employer and requesting time off for moving days.

Eight weeks before the move

Here are tasks it may help to handle at two months out:

  1. Hold a garage sale — You can make some extra cash by selling off the items singled out during the decluttering phase. This can help you offset the costs of moving or provide funds for new items you may need in your new home. If certain items don't sell, consider donating them to a local charity or organization.
  2. Start gathering and buying boxes — It’s also a good time to begin collecting boxes for packing your belongings. You can check with local grocery stores, bookstores or online marketplaces for free or affordable moving boxes. Ensure you have a variety of sizes to accommodate different items. It's also a good idea to invest in sturdy packing tape.
  3. Gather packing supplies — This may include bubble wrap, packing paper, packing peanuts, markers, labels and tape dispensers. Having these supplies on hand should make the packing process more efficient and organized.

Four weeks before the move

With one month left, think about ramping up your preparations:

  1. Get organized to pack — Choosing a system for packing that keeps your household organized should streamline the overall process. This may involve labeling boxes with the room they belong to or using a color-coded system.
  2. Start packing — Consider packing non-essential items a little each day, including items you won't need in the coming weeks. This probably includes out-of-season clothing, extra linens or rarely used kitchenware. Packing gradually can prevent overwhelming last-minute packing sessions and allow you to focus on other moving-related tasks.
  3. Schedule to transfer utilities — Next, you can arrange for the transfer or start-up of utilities at your new address. Depending on which utilities you use, you can contact your electricity, gas,  cable and internet service providers to schedule the necessary changes. That should ensure a seamless transition of essential services to your new home. You can visit our Transfer Service page for more information and assistance.
  4. Get moving insurance — Moving insurance provides added protection for your belongings during the move. You can inquire with your insurance provider or consider purchasing separate moving insurance to safeguard your items in case of any unforeseen circumstances or accidents during the transportation process.
  5. Make a plan for pets and children on moving day — If you have pets or young children, it's a good idea to consider their needs and make appropriate arrangements for moving day. Hiring a trusted pet-sitter or someone to watch your children during the moving process can make things simpler for everyone involved.

Two weeks before the move

As the move draws near, tasks shift to final preparations:

  1. Gather all important documents in one place — Try to collect and safely store all essential documents such as passports, identification cards, birth certificates, medical records and financial documents. You can benefit from storing important documents in a secure, accessible spot to avoid misplacing them during the move.
  2. Continue packing — Continue to focus on items you use less frequently. As you pack, continue to label each box with its contents and destination room.
  3. Fill prescriptions — Refilling any necessary prescriptions will provide you an ample supply during the transition period and should prevent any disruptions in your regular medication routine.

One week before the move

As the final countdown begins, here are last steps to work through:

  1. Pack a bag — Try to prepare a bag with essential items for each family member. Suggested items include toiletries, change of clothes, necessary medications, chargers, important documents and any other personal items you'll need immediate access to when you arrive at your new home. This can help you avoid rummaging through boxes to find essential items during the first few days of settling in.
  2. Change of address — This is also a good stage to notify relevant parties of your change of address. Consider updating your address with the postal service, banks, credit card companies, insurance providers, subscriptions and any other organizations or individuals who need to know your new address.
  3. Eat all perishable food — Aim to consume or dispose of any perishable food items in your refrigerator and pantry. This should minimize waste and prevent unpleasant surprises when cleaning out the fridge on moving day.

The day before the move

With the move just around the corner, it’s a good idea to focus on these last-minute tasks:

  1. Finish packing — Try to wrap up any remaining packing tasks, ensuring everything is labeled and organized. This could include a final walk-through of your home to check for any missed items or areas that still need attention. It's a good idea to be thorough here to ensure everything is ready for your move.
  2. Clean — Try to make time to give your current home a thorough cleaning. This would include vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, wiping down surfaces and cleaning appliances.
  3. Get a good night's sleep — Give yourself the chance to rest up for the big day ahead. Moving can be physically and mentally demanding, so a good night's sleep can help you to feel refreshed and energized on moving day.

The day of the move

It's finally here! Follow these steps to ensure a successful moving day:

  1. Set your alarm — Try to wake up early to give yourself plenty of time to prepare for the movers' arrival or to start loading the moving vehicle. Starting the day early will help you stay on schedule and manage any unexpected last-minute tasks that may arise.
  2. Time to move — Assist the movers if you'd like. Using proper lifting techniques will help protect yourself and your belongings.
