Quick home energy saving tips for this summer

Check out these free and easy summer energy conservation tips you can do immediately to reduce your energy usage while staying cool and comfortable.

Adjust your thermostat

One of the best summer energy efficiency tips you can do is raise the thermostat by four degrees when no one is home for more than four hours.

Use ceiling fans

Set your ceiling fan to rotate counter-clockwise to create a windchill effect that will make it feel around four degrees cooler.

Avoid using large appliances

Do not use high-usage appliances like the dishwasher, washer, dryer, oven and pool pump from 2 to 6 p.m. Better yet, give yourself (and your stove) a break and skip cooking dinner tonight.

Check your AC units

Air conditioners require regular maintenance in order to operate at peak performance. Make sure you schedule semi-annual maintenance with your heating and cooling company so they can check that your AC units are functioning properly before the summer heat kicks in. They should be checking coolant levels, signs of any potential leaks, coils, fins or evaporative coolers if applicable.

Unplug

Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors and unplug from technology. Literally unplugging your electronics at home is a great way to save energy during the summer. Schedule some device-free family time outside and make sure everything is turned off and unplugged before you go.

Save up to 10% each year on heating and cooling bills by turning back the thermostat 7°-10°F for 8 hours a day.*

Plus, sometimes lowering your usage helps keep the lights on for you and your neighbors.
