Looking to save on electricity?

Find the perfect plan for your lifestyle and budget.

Why do electricity bills fluctuate?

Your bill can be higher or lower depending on a few things, such as weather, increases/decreases in your usage and efficiency or a problem with your heating or cooling system. For example, in the summer you may be consistently running your air conditioning to stay cool, increasing your usage. Your winter bill may be higher since you turn on the heating system to stay warm. Your winter bill may also be higher if your home is not weather-sealed properly, as heat will escape and your heating system will have to work harder to keep the space at a particular temperature. Click here to see the average utility bill in Texas.

How to budget for upcoming bills

You can budget for your upcoming bills based on previous bills you have received, but there will be seasonal factors that may cause a bill to be higher or lower than usual. Below are a few budgeting tips we have collected to help you save money and get a better idea of what to expect from your bill month to month.

  • Review your billing history. Looking at your past bills can help you see when your electricity usage fluctuates. With this knowledge, you can estimate your electricity budget for each month and prepare for higher electricity usage months.
  • Consider a budget billing plan. The name “budget billing” can differ between electricity companies, but they usually have the same function. At Reliant, it’s called Average Monthly Billing. This budgeting option takes your monthly bills over the past year and divides them by 12 to find your average bill. You will then be charged roughly the same amount each month.
  • Use a Bill Estimator. To get a calculated estimate of your electricity bill and expected usage based on the historical data of your residence, try our Bill Estimator tool.*

Tips to reduce your electricity usage

If you still find yourself using too much electricity and missing your budget, try some of these electricity saving tips to reduce your usage and lower your electricity bill.

  • Lower the water heater temperature. Set your water heater to a lower temperature to reduce its electricity demand.
  • Turn off all appliances and lights at night. Walk through your house before bed and turn off all unnecessary appliances and lights to reduce electricity usage. You could also consider using timers, power strips and motion-detector switches to automatically turn off lights and appliances and save electricity.1
  • Check energy efficiency ratings on new and current appliances in the house. Appliances with Energy Star labels are considered energy efficient by the government and can help save you money.2 If you need to purchase an appliance in the near future, look for the Energy Star label.
  • Check and update your insulation, roof, windows and doors. Some of the biggest electricity consumption problems can stem from poor insulation in the house. Make sure your house is properly insulated and there are no leaks in attic ductwork. Check your roof for any leaks and consider investing in a cool roof depending on the climate. Cool roofs reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat. It is also important to check your windows and doors are properly insulated with weather stripping or caulk. If you need to update your windows, consider double-pane windows with low solar-gain coefficients, low U factors and reflective coatings. Not only will this help save you money, but it can add to your house’s market value.1

When does the electricity bill come?

Electricity companies send out electricity bills each month with a set deadline for when the payment for that cycle is due. On an electricity bill, you will find a breakdown of your usage for that bill cycle, as well as the amount you owe. If your electricity bill payment is late, it is likely that you will be charged a late fee. For a detailed explanation of how to read your electric bill, visit our Understanding Your Bill page.

Where do you pay your electricity bill?

When you are ready to pay your electricity bill, there are typically a few options available. Online and by phone are two common ways to pay your bill. Many electricity companies have secure online portals in which customers can make bill payments. The options for paying online will vary from one electricity company to another, but typically include credit card, debit card and/or automatic transfers.

If you prefer to pay by phone, you can call your company, and submit a payment through customer support representatives or an automated system, depending on the electricity company. There are also more traditional ways of paying, such as mailing a check or paying in person at a payment location.
