What are greenhouse gas emissions?

Greenhouse gases are molecules in the air that have the ability to trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere. Burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gases for energy and transportation releases molecules into the atmosphere. These gases trap heat close to the earth, causing what is known as the "greenhouse effect.” If we all work together to drive less, conserve energy wisely and create less waste, we can reduce our carbon footprint and help fight climate change.

What is a carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint measures the amount of CO2 emissions produced, directly or indirectly, by households, businesses or other activities. Direct emissions pertain to those from travel and natural gas use. Indirect emissions include those created by producing electricity, clothing, food and other goods and services used by the household or business. Driving gas-fueled vehicles, using gas and electricity in your home, and purchasing items made in facilities that release carbon dioxide are examples of how we are adding to our carbon footprint.

By helping purchase carbon offsets, you are effectively helping to reduce carbon emissions overall. That's why Reliant is proud to introduce EcoShareSM. With EcoShareSM, a portion of the money you provide is used to reduce emissions where such reductions would not be possible without additional carbon offset funding.

What is a carbon offset?

A carbon offset is the verified sequestration, avoidance of or reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases, made specifically for the purpose of compensating for an emission made elsewhere. Basically, carbon offsets are used to fund projects that work to avoid or reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon offsets give financing to renewable energy, forest protection projects, reforestation projects and energy innovation programs around the world that can verify how much financing is required to avoid the release or reduce specific amounts of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

One carbon offset is equal to the reduction of one metric ton of carbon dioxide or carbon-dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions. The carbon offsets Reliant purchases have been verified as real and measurable. Buying carbon offsets has the same effect on climate change as directly reducing the carbon emissions associated with your electricity supply, travel and other activities. Projects receiving money from carbon offsets must prove that the reduction in emissions could not have occurred without the carbon offset funding, so carbon offsets truly do result in additional greenhouse gas reductions that would not have happened if you did not take action and donate.

Earn bill credits with your solar panels

If you already have solar panels, Reliant has renewable electricity plans that can help you make the most of your solar power. With the Reliant Solar Payback Plus plan, you’ll receive bill credits when your solar panels generate excess energy and return it to the electric grid.3

1 Qualifying Plans do not include electricity plans with renewable content greater than the statewide average for renewable content (content information is available in the plan’s Electricity Facts Label).

2 Your participation in the Make It Solar program will end at the same time as your participation in the qualifying electricity plan through which you were enrolled in the Make It Solar program ends or until your retail electric service with Reliant is discontinued. Enrollment in the Make It Solar program will continue if you move from one qualifying plan to another without a discontinuation of electric service by Reliant. You may cancel your participation in the Make It Solar program at any time by calling 1-866-222-7100. Cancellation will be processed by the next business day and will be effective at the end of your then-current program month. Changes will be reflected on your Reliant bill in up to two billing cycles.
