The difference between EV chargers
The difference between EV chargers
The three different types of electric vehicle (EV) chargers give you plenty of opportunities to stay charged up. While Level 1 and 2 chargers are typically for use at home, Level 3 chargers are usually used at commercial and industrial locations.
Learn more about the type of chargers below so you can decide if you want to update your home to accommodate faster charging.
Level 1
EV chargers
Fully charged
11 to 30 hours
Range per hour (RPH)
5 miles
These chargers usually come standard with your EV purchase. No additional installation cost is required, as you simply plug them into a standard 120-volt wall outlet.
Level 2
EV chargers
Fully charged
4 to 6 hours
Range per hour (RPH)
13 to 37 miles
Level 2 chargers can typically charge your EV four to five times faster than Level 1 chargers, as they use 240 volts of electricity. If you already have a 240-volt outlet, no extra installation costs will be required. If you don’t have one, the increase in voltage for a Level 2 charger may require installation costing between $400 and $1,700.
Level 3
EV chargers
Fully charged
20 to 40 minutes
Range per hour (RPH)
100 miles or more
Level 3 chargers are also known as DC Fast Chargers. They’ll charge your EV significantly faster than the others but are typically only installed at businesses due to the high cost and equipment required.
Prior to purchasing a charger, you should confirm a few things. Make sure your home has the right level of electrical supply flowing to it. Plus, ensure your electrical panel has space. If you don’t hire an electrician, it is recommended that you consult with one before installing a Level 2 charger yourself. You’ll also need to get a permit before installation.
If you’re installing a Level 2 charger on your own, here is some information that could help.
