No smart thermostat, no problem — earn bill credits with the Manual Thermostats program

With the Degrees of Difference with Manual Thermostats program, you don't need a smart thermostat to be rewarded. During certain times, such as when high electricity demand is anticipated, a Degrees of Difference event is called. During the event, you can make small changes to reduce your use and receive a $0.60 bill credit for every kWh of electricity you save when compared to your typical usage.1

It's free and easy to enroll and there are no changes to your current electricity plan

The Reliant Degrees of Difference with Manual Thermostats program allows customers to earn bill credits for using less electricity during requested periods, such as those with high electricity demand. You'll receive bill credits of $0.60 per kWh for using less electricity than your typical usage during the Degrees of Difference with Manual Thermostats program events.1

During a Degrees of Difference event, such as when high electricity demand is anticipated, you’ll be notified of an event and be asked to reduce energy use for a specific time frame. Events can last up to 4 hours, but your participation is completely voluntary. During the events, you can help reduce your usage by adjusting your thermostat and holding off on using large appliances like the dishwasher, washing machine, dryer or pool pump. For reducing your electricity use, you’ll receive a $0.60 bill credit for every kWh you’ve reduced compared to your typical use.

We review your electricity usage over the last 5 weekdays before the Degrees of Difference event and average the kWh of usage during the same hours to establish your typical electricity usage. Then, Reliant compares your typical electricity usage to your usage during the Degrees of Difference event. If this method shows a reduction of 1 kWh or more, you will receive a credit of $0.60 per kWh for using less electricity than typical during the event. The credit will show on your bill within 2 billing cycles. The bill credit is not redeemable for cash.

Degrees of Difference events can be called at any time of the year between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. There can also be more than one Degrees of Difference event per day. Events are more likely to happen during the summer and winter months when electricity demand is typically higher.

If there is an energy emergency on the electric grid, Reliant may need to call a critical Degrees of Difference event, which may occur at any time of day.

You’ll receive an email request to reduce your electricity usage for an event. The situations that cause Reliant to request customers to reduce electricity usage are typically unexpected, like a significant change in the weather forecast or an unplanned outage of generation. As a result, we usually have limited advance notice but attempt to notify customers of an event as soon as possible.

Bill credits you receive from a Degrees of Difference event will appear on your Reliant bill within 2 billing cycles. Your Reliant electricity account must be active at the time of credit award to receive the credit.

An active electricity Smart Meter at your service address is required to participate, but there are no other special equipment requirements.

A few days after a Degrees of Difference event, you’ll receive an email summarizing your electricity usage amount and any bill credit that you earned for reducing electricity use.

Small changes around your home can help reduce your electricity use. During an event, you can adjust the temperature on your thermostat by a few degrees. You can limit your use of large appliances like your dishwasher, washing machine and dryer. It can also help to unplug unused electronics and switch off extra lights. View these helpful energy-saving tips for more ideas on how to reduce your electricity usage.
